Fractalus 1.0 Progress…

G’day!

Its been almost a year since the release of 0.9 and when I’ve had time around work and other things, I’ve been working on 1.0.

Progress towards the 1.0 release is now well underway, and many changes have been implemented so far. My main focus in 1.0’s development is on finishing up the gameplay logic and flow, graphics and 3D modelling work (including the alien pilot), and general improvements to bring the remake closer to the original game. I have not yet started work on the alien pilot but I have been working on a model for the mothership, the players ship (the Valkyrie) and an updated model for the cockpit;

New Cockpit Model

These models are still works in progress (the mothership model’s geometry is largely finished but the texture hasn’t been finalised, and the valkyrie and cockpit models are unfinished and untextured) so the above images are only early previews. The alien model will likely be the last model I create for 1.0 as I am still new to 3D modelling and learning as I go.

The gameplay logic and flow is now much closer to the original gameplay, complete with the starting/ranking level selection screen before entering the cockpit, bonus points calculated and awarded upon return to the mothership, variable mothership availability, etc.;

There is still a lot of work to be done before 1.0 is ready for release, so I’m currently hoping to be able to release 1.0 some time later this year. Follow me on Twitter or my Facebook page for updates and in the meantime the 0.9 build is still available for download from the Fractalus project page.

    I love and own the original. Seen a video of your version on YouTube. Outstanding!
    Respect to you for remaking this great game.

    Thanks for sharing your work! One of my all-time favourite games, so looking forward to 1.0. The new models look nice, but hopefully won’t be too hard for non-gaming computers to handle 🙂

    Man you so need to finish this… yes there is a market for high quality remakes!!!!

  4. WoPo says:

    I have played your earlier version and I am thrilled. If you can get the Alien to work that would be great. I am already looking forward to 1.0

    Thanks for this small but great game

    Luke… any chance you’re looking for contributors to your project? I’m a 3D modeler with considerable experience (happy to share examples) and I would be thrilled by the opportunity to donate an alien pilot model…

  6. Luke says:

    Hi Peter, thanks for the offer to contribute but for now I’m keeping it as a solo project and I’ve actually already completed all the models for the project at this point. I’ve kept it as a solo project as a way to learn all the various parts of building a game, and in a way to show that games can still be built by a solo developer.

    Great to hear that the project is making progress towards V1.0! The game already plays awesome and fluid, especially with a XB360 controller.
    Just imagine approaching the mothership and landing bay after a mission… wow!
    Brings back good memories from the mid-80’s.
    Will surely donate some €uros for V1.x! 😉

    Hello,
    can we have an update. I’m still waiting anxiuosly.

    Thanks,
    Steve

  9. Luke says:

    Hi Steve, work on 1.0 is well underway and I’m currently hoping to have it released by the end of the year.

    Super excited for v1.0!

    Just had a thought while playing:

    What if you had an option that allowed for dual displays, with the outside world on one screen and the cockput HUD stationary (not moving) on screen 2. Then those of us with projectors (or otherwise big TVs or monitors) could project the outside world on to a giant screen and see the HUD displays on a normal size monitor. Would make it a more interesting immersive experience. Just a thought. Keep it up! 🙂

    I’m very excited and wait for the next version, it’s very good so far.

    best wishes!

  12. Lars Baumstark says:

    Wow, just flew a bit on the new M1 Macbook Air. 2580×1600 resolution, super smooth, even under x86/64 Rosetta emulation.
    Any chance to see a native M1 version soon?
    😉

  13. Luke says:

    Hi Lars, good to hear it runs on the new M1 Macs! I wasn’t sure if Fractalus would run on them, but it sounds like Rosetta works well. I think native M1 support was added in Unity 2020.2, but I’m currently building Fractalus 1.0 on Unity 2019.4 so for now I’m not able to build a native M1 version.
